Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush mountain region is considered highly prone to earthquakes because it lies along the boundary between the Eurasian and Indian tectonic plates.
Previously, in August 2025, a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in eastern Afghanistan caused widespread destruction, collapsing thousands of buildings and claiming over 2,200 lives.
