Madurai Airport Officially Declared an International Airport by Central Government

The Central Government has officially issued a government order declaring Madurai Airport as an international airport. The move is expected to significantly improve international air connectivity to southern Tamil Nadu.

The decision was approved during a Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Narendra Modi last Wednesday. The cabinet agreed to upgrade Madurai Airport to international status in order to strengthen connectivity and promote tourism in the region.

Announcing the decision, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that several international airlines have already shown interest in operating flights from Madurai.

He noted that the upgrade would improve connectivity to several major pilgrimage destinations in Tamil Nadu. These include the famous Meenakshi Amman Temple, Koodal Azhagar Temple, Thirupparankundram Murugan Temple, Pazhamudircholai Murugan Temple, and the sacred pilgrimage town of Rameswaram.

The development is expected to enhance air connectivity for pilgrims and tourists traveling to these important spiritual destinations from various parts of the world.

The announcement has been widely welcomed by political leaders and residents of Madurai. Following the approval, the government has now issued the official order to implement the decision.

With this move, international flight services are expected to begin from Madurai Airport in the near future, marking a major milestone in the region’s aviation and tourism development.
