Two Consecutive Earthquakes Jolt Sikkim; No Major Damage Reported

Two consecutive earthquakes were recorded in Sikkim on Thursday (February 26), triggering concern among residents.

According to the National Centre for Seismology, the first earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale struck Gyalshing district at a depth of 10 km around 11:24 AM. Shortly afterward, at approximately 12:17 PM, another tremor measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale was recorded about 11 km northwest of Gangtok, also at a depth of 10 km.

Officials confirmed that no major damage or casualties have been reported from either of the quakes. However, the occurrence of two tremors within a short span has caused anxiety among local residents.

Shallow earthquakes, particularly those occurring at lower depths, are generally considered more dangerous because they can cause stronger surface shaking. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation amid concerns about possible aftershocks.
