Over 2 lakh dog bite cases were reported in Jammu and Kashmir during 2024–2025, with the government stepping up measures to control stray dog population and reduce incidents.

Over 2 Lakh Dog Bite Cases Reported in Jammu & Kashmir in Two Years

More than 2 lakh dog bite incidents have been reported in Jammu and Kashmir over the past two years, Health Minister Sakina Itoo informed the Legislative Assembly.

According to official data, a total of 2,06,460 dog bite cases were recorded in 2024 and 2025 combined. In 2024 alone, 93,765 cases were reported, while 1,12,695 cases were registered in 2025, showing a significant rise.

The highest number of incidents — 1,26,844 cases — were reported across ten districts: Jammu, Kathua, Udhampur, Rajouri, Samba, Doda, Reasi, Poonch, Ramban, and Kishtwar. Of these, 54,863 cases occurred in 2024 and 71,981 in 2025.

The government has stated that intensive measures are being taken to control and reduce dog bite incidents across the region. Efforts include vaccination drives, sterilization programs, and public awareness initiatives.

Notably, a scientific survey conducted in 2023 found that Srinagar Municipal Corporation alone had 64,416 stray dogs, highlighting the scale of the issue.
