Rain Knocks Australia Out; Zimbabwe Qualify for Super 8
Australia were eliminated from the T20 World Cup after the Zimbabwe vs Ireland match was washed out, confirming Zimbabwe’s qualification for the Super 8 stage.
Rain played a decisive role in eliminating Australia from the T20 World Cup, while Zimbabwe secured qualification for the Super 8 stage.
The ICC T20 World Cup, being held in India and Sri Lanka, has reached its crucial stage. So far, India, West Indies, South Africa, England, and New Zealand have qualified for the Super 8, with three more spots remaining.
In today’s match (February 17) between Zimbabwe and Ireland in Pallekele, Sri Lanka, not a single ball was bowled due to heavy rain, and the match was abandoned. As a result, both teams shared one point each.
With this outcome, Zimbabwe confirmed their place in the Super 8. Australia, who needed Zimbabwe to lose, were knocked out of the tournament at the league stage.
Australia, a former champion and one of the strongest teams, had suffered defeats against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka in the league stage, managing only one win against Ireland. They are scheduled to play Oman on February 20, but the result will no longer affect their qualification chances.
In Group B, Sri Lanka finished at the top with 6 points, while Zimbabwe secured second place with 5 points to qualify for the Super 8.
Australia, winners of multiple ICC titles including the World Test Championship, ODI World Cup, and T20 World Cup, have exited at the league stage for the first time in 17 years.
With seven teams already qualified for the Super 8, the final spot will be decided in the Pakistan vs Namibia match. If Pakistan wins, they will qualify; if they lose, the USA will advance.
