More than 32,000 cancer cases have been detected in Jammu and Kashmir over the past three years, with the Kashmir region reporting the highest numbers, according to official data presented in the Assembly.

More than 32,000 cancer cases have been detected in Jammu and Kashmir over the past three years.

Responding in writing to a question raised by PDP MLA Wahid Para in the Assembly, Health Minister Sakina Itoo stated that 32,425 cancer cases were identified in the Union Territory during the last three years. Among them, the Kashmir region recorded the highest number of cases. According to official data, 25,621 cancer cases were reported in the Kashmir Valley between 2021 and 2024.

In 2021, a total of 8,021 cancer cases were recorded, including 4,333 men and 3,688 women. In 2023, 8,621 cases were reported (4,685 men and 3,936 women), while in 2024, the number rose to 8,979 cases, including 4,789 men and 4,190 women.

In the Jammu region, 6,804 cancer cases were detected over three years from 2023 to 2025. Among these, 2,026 cases were recorded in 2023, including 1,177 men and 859 women. In 2024, 2,187 cases were reported (1,248 men and 939 women). In 2025, the number increased to 2,581 cases, including 1,116 men and 1,465 women.

Amid the rising number of cancer cases, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced in the budget that the government will formulate a cancer control strategy for Jammu and Kashmir in collaboration with NITI Aayog and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

He stated that this initiative would help detect the disease at an early stage and ensure better treatment for patients.
