Australian Open 2026 – Carlos’s Career Slam & Elena’s Comeback

The 2026 Australian Open, the first of the four Grand Slam tournaments of the year, was held from January 18 to February 1, 2026, at Melbourne Park. The 114th edition of the tournament (58th in the Open Era) featured five major professional events: men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles, and mixed doubles, along with competitions for junior and wheelchair players.

In the men’s singles final, Spanish tennis prodigy Carlos Alcaraz defeated Serbian legend Novak Djokovic in four sets to claim the prestigious Norman Brookes Challenge Cup. With this victory, the 22-year-old Alcaraz became the youngest male player in history to complete a Career Grand Slam in singles. The win also brought an end to Djokovic’s remarkable 10–0 unbeaten record in Australian Open finals. Djokovic continues to top the all-time charts with 24 Grand Slam titles and 14 Grand Slam final defeats.

In the women’s singles final, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan overcame Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus to lift the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup. The match was a rematch of the 2023 final, which Sabalenka had won. This marked Rybakina’s second Grand Slam title, while Sabalenka reached her fourth consecutive Australian Open final. Both players reached the final without dropping a set during the tournament.

In the men’s doubles, Christian Harrison (USA) and Neal Skupski (England) emerged as champions. The women’s doubles title was claimed by Elise Mertens (Belgium) and Zhang Shuai (China). Australia celebrated a home triumph in the mixed doubles, with Olivia Gadecki and John Peers winning the championship.

India did not have representation in the singles events. In doubles, Yuki Bhambri, Sriram Balaji, and Niki Poonacha partnered with international players but exited in the second and third rounds. In the junior girls’ category, Maaya Rajeshwaran Revathi was eliminated in the first round.

The 2026 Australian Open once again delivered historic moments, high-quality tennis, and showcased the emergence of a new generation of champions on one of the sport’s biggest stages.
